“Britain was once a wooded isle, with over 98% of the land covered in trees. But now only 2% of that ancient wild wood survives. Cultural amnesia means we have forgotten our woodland past but we are a people of the woods. Our fates are linked, ensuring the survival of our woodlands and trees is imperative to our future.” – Carl Rowlison, Director and Co-Founder.
What we are
Plant One is a registered Community Interest Company. Every penny we receive goes directly towards putting trees in the ground for the benefit of all. We’re conscious of the importance of our native habitats, that’s why each of our multiple sites is assessed for it’s suitability before trees are planted.
Below are our core aims.
- Enabling the community to plant trees where they’re most needed by matching landowners with businesses
- Restoring the Celtic Rainforest
- Habitat creation and improvement for wildlife
- Providing expertise enabling landowners to increase biodiversity
- Creating public access woodland
- Increasing carbon capture within the UK through local communities
- Supporting local communities to increase the UK’s canopy cover
Who We Are
Carl Rowlinson, Co-Founder and Director
‘The soil under the grass is dreaming of a young forest, and under the pavement the soil is dreaming of grass‘ – Wendell Berry
Walking in the woods with my grandad is one of my earliest memories. As he listed the names of the trees I would run through the woods, ensuring each species was accounted for. My love and passion for the environment was born during these arboricultural roll calls.
I transformed my childhood woodland walks into a career, as I qualified as a tree surgeon and later started Wildscape, an environment led landscape and gardening business. Protecting and growing habitat and ensuring the ecology of this green planet is a challenge we must all take responsibility in. Starting Plant One is an opportunity for me to use my professional training to meet my environmental responsibilities. Let’s get some trees in the ground.

‘Great design is a multi-layered relationship between human life and its environment.‘ – Naoto Fukasawa
Since my earliest days roaming the wilds of Scotland I have had an innate connection with the outdoors. I have spent much of my life hiking, biking and generally getting lost in woods, forests and mountains. This passion for the environment and how people use, interact and ultimately care for their local countryside has driven my working life as well, with over ten years working as a creative in the environmental sector. The chance to lend my expertise and get involved with a project like Plant One Corwall was one I couldn’t miss.

”It is our collective and individual responsibility to preserve and tend to the world in which we all live’ -Dalai Lama
I work at the University of Exeter as a Research Assistant. I have been involved in various projects ranging from improving waste water treatment in India to algal remediation of contaminated mine water in Cornwall. I’ve also organised outreach events to improve community understanding and enthusiasm for Life Sciences. I have a passion for the natural world that pretty much fuels every waking moment of my life. Before I make a decision, I first ask myself how the environment will be impacted. Plant One is a way for me to show my appreciation and love for the natural world around me.
Harriet Dickson, Mapping Coordinator
‘It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.‘ –David Attenborough
I found my passion for the environment whilst working and travelling in Australia. Diving in the Great Barrier Reef was the first time I had come face to face with the long-term environmental damage we as humans had created and this cemented my enthusiasm to help shape the earth’s future.
I first moved to Cornwall five years ago to study Marine Biology. I instantly fell in love with the unique wildlife and landscapes that Cornwall has to offer, and this has developed my passion even further. I feel a great responsibility for not only reducing my impact on our planet, but also to give back and act on protecting and restoring the environment around me.
